Former Ghana Football Association chairman Nana Sam Brew Butler has said that the association cannot sideline the government during decision making once the state continues to fund the national teams.
Brew Butler, GFA chairman between 1993 and 1997, appeared on GTV Sports Plus on Thursday night alongside former chairmen of the GFA – Nyaho Nyaho – Tamakloe and Alhaji MND Jawula – to discuss the nosedive of Ghana football and the way forward.
“Who funds the FA and who is the FA. The clubs and all that. Nobody funds Kotoko, Hearts or Dwarfs. Its the individuals. But let’s admit government funds the national teams so you cannot simply say I want your money but I don’t want you.” Brew Butler said.
The government of Ghana and the Ministry of Youth and Sports reportedly wanted former Premier Lague manager Chris Hughton to become the next Black Stars head coach to succeed Milovan Rajevac who was fired following Ghana’s disastrous tournament in Cameroon 2021 AFCON but the GFA has eventually named their preferred choice Otto Addo an ex – Ghana international footballer as the interim head coach of the Black Stars with Hughton settling for a technical advisor role.
George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani were named assistants to Addo.
The four man team has been put together to take charge of the two matches against rivals Nigeria. The Black Stars will take on the Super Eagles at the Cape Coast stadium on March 24 before travelling to Nigeria for the 2nd leg at the Abuja Sports stadium on Sunday, March 27, 2022.
According to the former Ebusua Dwarfs top brass, government must have a representative on the board of the GFA in order to put a stop to the perceived political interference on football matters of the GFA.
“The GFA must have a government representative on their board and once that happens any decision taken at the GFA will be binding on them (government). That will put a stop to the interference from people in government. But if we do not do this then the interference will always be there” Nana Sam Brew Butler added.
