Yussif Basigi has etched his name in the annals of Ghanaian football history by becoming the first coach to lead both the Black Queens and Black Princesses to gold medal triumphs in major African tournaments.
The latest milestone occurred on Thursday evening at the electrifying Cape Coast Stadium, where Basigi’s Black Princesses delivered a stellar performance against Nigeria.
In a thrilling encounter that captivated fans, Ghana emerged victorious with a 2-1 scoreline after extra time, clinching the team’s maiden gold medal at the 13th African Games.
This remarkable achievement adds to Basigi’s previous success with the Black Queens in 2015. Under his guidance, Ghana’s senior women’s team secured gold at the African Games after a hard-fought campaign.
Notably, Ghana qualified for the tournament by overcoming Zimbabwe with a 4–3 aggregate score in the final round of qualifiers.
In the decisive final match against Cameroon, Basigi’s tactical prowess guided the Black Queens to a historic victory. The team sealed the gold medal with a dramatic 1–0 win, courtesy of a late 88th-minute goal from striker Portia Boakye.
Basigi’s remarkable coaching journey continued when he was reappointed as the head coach of the Ghana Women’s U-20 national team on December 14, 2022.
