Jordan Ayew is anticipated to captain Ghana’s Black Stars in their final two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying games against Angola and Niger, Sportsworldghana.com understands.
In the previous qualifiers against Sudan, head coach Otto Addo appointed Mohammed Kudus as captain after Thomas Partey was unavailable. Despite high hopes, Ghana was held to a goalless draw at the Accra Sports Stadium in the first leg and suffered a 2-0 defeat in the return leg held in Libya under Kwesi Appiah’s management.
Addo’s decision to pass over Ayew and give the captaincy to Kudus sparked considerable backlash, with fans questioning why Ayew, a seasoned player, was not given the armband. However, reports indicate that Addo has since met with Ayew to clear up any misunderstandings. Following these discussions, Ayew is now expected to lead the team in the upcoming matches.
The Black Stars are under pressure, having failed to secure a win in four qualifiers so far. Ghana lost 1-0 at the Baba Yara Stadium and later managed only a 1-1 draw with Niger in Berkane.
Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for AFCON 2025 in Morocco now depend on winning their remaining games. They will travel to Luanda to face Angola on November 15 and then host Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on November 18.
Currently, the Black Stars sit in third place in Group F with just two points from four games, trailing Angola and Sudan.
