When Ghana needed a spark, Brandon Thomas-Asante delivered.

Introduced from the bench with the Black Stars searching for a breakthrough against Panama in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Thomas-Asante produced the decisive moment that ultimately secured all three points for Ghana.

The game appeared destined for a goalless draw as both sides struggled to find a way through in a tense Group L encounter. Panama had frustrated Ghana for long periods, while the Black Stars found it difficult to convert possession into clear-cut opportunities.

However, football matches can often be decided by moments of inspiration, and Thomas-Asante provided exactly that.

The forward entered the contest and immediately injected fresh energy into Ghana’s attack. His movement troubled Panama’s defenders, his work rate lifted the team and his willingness to run directly at opponents gave Ghana a new dimension in the final stages.

As the clock ticked into stoppage time, Thomas-Asante seized his moment.

Winning possession during a rapid Ghanaian counterattack, he surged forward with purpose and composure. Spotting the run of young midfielder , Thomas-Asante delivered a perfectly timed pass into the penalty area.

Yirenkyi still had work to do, but the opportunity had been created.

The 20-year-old calmly applied the finish, sending the ball into the back of the net and sparking wild celebrations among Ghanaian supporters.

While Yirenkyi will rightly be remembered as the goalscorer and Ghana’s youngest-ever World Cup scorer, the goal would never have happened without the vision, determination and execution of Brandon Thomas-Asante.

It was a textbook example of the impact substitutes can have at the highest level.

Coming off the bench, he immediately changed the rhythm of Ghana’s attack.

Coming off the bench, he provided fresh legs when Panama were beginning to tire.

Coming off the bench, he created the winning goal.

In tournaments like the World Cup, squad depth often separates successful teams from unsuccessful ones. Thomas-Asante’s contribution against Panama demonstrated exactly why he is such an important member of Carlos Queiroz’s squad.

He may not have started the match, but when Ghana needed a hero in the closing moments, he stepped forward and delivered.

Off the bench.

Instant impact.

Created the winner.

Brandon Thomas-Asante’s contribution may not appear on the scoresheet, but his assist could prove one of the most important moments of Ghana’s World Cup campaign. As the Black Stars look ahead to crucial clashes against England and Croatia, his performance against Panama serves as a reminder that game-changers do not always start matches—sometimes they arrive from the bench and change everything.
