Transfer Talk: Rio Ferdinand fires warning to Manchester United over Tariq Lamptey deal

Rio Ferdinand has warned Manchester United against a move for Brighton winger Tariq Lamptey.

The 21-year-old came through Chelsea’s academy and has quickly established himself as a key figure under Graham Potter since joining Brighton in 2020.

Lamptey has started just eight games in the Premier League this season and made just 11 appearances in the league last term due to injury.

Last week, reports claimed that Ralf Rangnick had identified Lamptey as a target to improve United’s right wing, while Arsenal have also been linked with a move.

However, Ferdinand believes the winger, who is capable of playing in both defensive and offensive roles on the right flank, needs more playing time at Brighton before he moves to another club.

‘I think it’ll be difficult [for United] to bring players in this window, I don’t think this window is an easy one,’ Ferdinand told FIVE.

‘I think Premier League players who know the league have a premium as well, so their price is even bigger.

‘I think it’ll be difficult, the names mentioned, I can’t see them coming this window, I’d be very surprised if that does happen.

‘Lamptey has shown real glimpses in his time at Brighton but he hasn’t played consistent football in terms of team selection, he hasn’t been in the team for long periods of time, he’s had big injuries.

‘I’d like to see him play more football, if I’m honest. I think he needs that as a young player to continue playing.’
