Jerome Boateng: “There doesn’t necessarily have to be a head of defense at Bayern Munich”

The round of 16 first leg in the Champions League against FC Salzburg (1-1) once again revealed glaring gaps in the Bavarian defense. The calls for a new chief of defense are getting louder.

Fans, media and experts complain about the lack of organization within the chain. Ex-Bayern player Jerome Boateng has his own opinion on the matter.

A 2:4 against VfL Bochum and a 1:1 against the underdog from Salzburg give FC Bayern what feels like a mini crisis. Even under Hansi Flick, FCB’s deficiencies in defense could hardly be overlooked. Even under Julian Nagelsmann there seems to be no lasting improvement in sight. Despite well-known and, above all, expensive newcomers like Dayot Upamecano, there is still a huge hole in the Munich defense. Above all, however, the experts agree that a real leader and conductor in the center of defense is sorely missed.

The veterans David Alaba and Jerome Boateng once filled this role. The latter has now become involved in the current defense debate at FC Bayern.

“Of course it takes time”

The ex-Munich native and current Lyon pro has his own opinion on the defense chief. “There doesn’t necessarily have to be one boss if both players divide up the people in front and know and understand each other well, as was the case with David and me, for example. Maybe someone speaks more, but the man next to him fulfills other tasks,” Boateng revealed to the “kicker”.

At the time, the former German national player practiced such a division of tasks with his neighbor David Alaba. “We knew each other very well. But of course that takes time,” said Boateng about his former teammate. In the same breath, the French legionnaire also calls for patience. Such chemistry between two players does not happen overnight, but is a product of frequent exchange and interaction.
