Midfielder Yaw Amankwa Baafi grabbed his first ever league goal for Accra Hearts of Oak, winning the Most Valuable Player of the game in which the Phobians cruised to a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nsoatreman at the Accra Sports Stadium.
After more than 20 outings in two seasons in the rainbow jersey, the 19-year-old finally wrote his name among the scorers in the Ghana Premier League.
His second-half left-foot strike gave the Phobians the cushion they needed to survive an Nsoatreman scare as they kept their title hopes alive.
The Phobians took the lead in the first half via an own goal.
But it was Baafi’s 65th-minute shot that became decisive for their victory before Nsoatreman pulled a consolation amid intense pressure.
He ended the day as the Most Valuable Player, following a scintillating performance in the Matchday 26 encounter.
Baafi joined Hearts of Oak at the beginning of the 2021/22 season under former coach Samuel Baodu, struggling to get a first-team role amid a difficult season.
He has, however, turned out to be a versatile player this season, even playing right back in some matches. But being used as a winger in Sunday’s game, the no. 7-shirted lad broke the jinx to grab his personal first and the team’s second to carry the day.
His goal thus becomes Hearts Oak’s 25 for the season, while the team has conceded 21, standing in third place on the league table with eight matches left to play.
