Legon Cities to punish head coach Maxwell Konadu after ‘players did not train’ comment before Bechem Utd loss

Legon Cities’ Acting General Manager, Nana Kwabena Asenso, has suggested that the club’s management will address the comments made by head coach Maxwell Konadu following their defeat against Bechem United.

The Royals faced the Hunters at the Nana Fosu Gyeabour Park in their matchday 31 fixture, where Emmanuel Avornyo’s goal secured a victory for the home side.

After the match, Konadu revealed that the team had only trained once before the game. He stated, “For me, in the first 30 minutes, we were in the game and could have taken the lead, but we couldn’t capitalize on the chances that came our way. But I will say one thing, we just couldn’t train the whole week. Our boys trained only once in the whole week for this game, so it reflected on the game. Our current level is not where we are supposed to be.”

When asked why they couldn’t train, Konadu replied, “It’s up to them. That’s another thing to talk about, but if we had trained well the whole week, we would have earned this point. I believe that.”

However, in an interview, Nana Kwabena Asenso expressed surprise at Konadu’s comments and stated that the club’s management would make a decision regarding the head coach’s statement.

“I have listened to what Maxwell Konadu said after the game, and from my position as General Manager, I don’t understand why the coach said that after the game,” he said on Asempa FM.

“The team trained before leaving for Bechem on Friday. We owe the players, but we have paid two months of their outstanding salaries, so why do you have to tell the media the team did not train?

“I was at the training grounds on Thursday because there was a friendly game scheduled, but it was canceled due to the rain. So I don’t know when the players did not train.

“The management will make a decision regarding what the coach (Maxwell Konadu) has said, and we will communicate that to the media.

“For now, our focus is on surviving in the Premier League, so we don’t want what the coach said to become an obstacle. That is our current priority.

“We lost to a better side because Bechem United is a good team. So if you tell me the team did not train and that’s why we lost, it doesn’t make sense,” he added.

Legon Cities currently occupies the 11th position on the league table with 40 points and is set to host Hearts of Oak in their matchday 32 fixture at the El-Wak Stadium on Saturday.
