The 18th edition of the AFCON was hosted by Senegal between 12-26 January 1992 at Stade de l’Amitie in Dakar and Stade Aline Sitoe Diatta in Ziguinchor.

AFCON 1992 had bonafide stars as Clemens Weaterhof’s Super Eagles had Finidi George, Stephen Keshi, Samson Siasia, Victor Ikpeba, Rashidi Yekini and Otto Pfister’s Ghana had Abedi Pele, Tony Yeboah, Ordatey Lamptey, Kwesi Appiah and Tony Baffoe.

Claude Leroy had Souleymane Jean Sane, Francoise Bocande and Oumar Gueye Sene
as Cameroon had Joseph-Antoine Bell, the Biyik brothers, and Cyril Makanaky.

Rabah Madjer, Jiel Tiehi, Kalusha Bwalya and Hossam Hassan were among the talented players who took part in the competition.

Ghana won every game en route to the finals as the Black Stars recorded slim 1-0 wins over Zambia and Egypt in the group stages.

In the quarter-finals, Abedi Pele’s 57th-minute goal secured a 2-1 win for Ghana against Congo.

In the semi-finals, Ghana in a derby against their perennial rivals Nigeria, won 2-1 thanks to Prince Polley’s 54th-minute winner after Abedi Pele had cancelled Adepojus’s 11th-minute strike in the 43rd minute.

Ivory Coast on the other hand in group C won 3-0 against Algeria and drew 0-0 against Congo.

Donald-Olivier Sie snatched a 94th-minute winner in the extra time for the Elephants in the quarter-finals against Zambia.

Ivory Coast progressed to the finals after a 3-1 win on penalties over Cameroon after a goalless draw in 120 minutes.

The day for the ultimate was on 26 January 1992 at the Stade de l’amitie in  Dakar. Abedi Pele, then African Footballer of the Year, missed the finals due to an accumulation of cards.

The game ended 0-0 after 120 minutes of action. The penalty shootout was needed to determine the winner as Ghana were 4 times the winner of the competition with Ivory Coast having never won the coveted trophy.

In the penalty shootout, Ivory Coast scored 11 with Djohan Joel Tiehi missing from the spot for Ivory Coast. Ghana scored 10 penalties with Isaac Asare and Tony Baffoe missing for the Black Stars.

In all, 24 penalties were taken by 22 different players as Aka Kouame and Tonny Baffoe took two each.

Ivory Coast won 11-10 on penalties as it was the first time that every player on the field took a penalty in a major international final.
