Ghana’s attacking midfielder, Mohammed Kudus, remains optimistic about the Black Stars’ prospects in advancing to the next round of the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), despite the team’s inability to secure a victory in their first two group matches, culminating in a 2-2 draw with Egypt.

In a compelling display at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium, the Black Stars, under Chris Hughton’s leadership, showcased resilience but fell short of clinching a win, settling for a shared outcome with the North Africans.

Notably, West Ham United star Kudus, making his AFCON debut against the Pharaohs, emerged as a standout performer, contributing significantly with a brace. His first goal, striking in the third minute of injury time in the first half, provided Ghana with an early lead.

Despite Kudus’s stellar performance, Egypt swiftly responded with an equalizer from Omar Marmoush in the second half, disrupting Ghana’s lead. Undeterred, Kudus found the net again in the 71st minute, momentarily restoring Ghana’s advantage, only to witness Egypt’s Mostafa Mohammed leveling the score three minutes later.

Speaking to the media post-match, Kudus, recognized as the man of the match, emphasized the need for continued effort and expressed confidence in the team’s qualification prospects. He stated, “Until we finish the last game in the group, it’s the same focus. You could see the fighting spirit and the energy from the guys today.”

Acknowledging the challenges ahead, Kudus stressed the importance of securing three points in their final group game against Mozambique on Monday, January 22. He affirmed, “We have to do more than that in the last game, we have to get the three points at all costs. We’ll see what’s gonna happen after.” The midfielder’s determination reflects the collective resolve of the Black Stars as they gear up for a decisive match that could shape their AFCON journey.
