Coventry City, an EFL Championship team, has announced the appointment of George Boateng, former Black Stars assistant coach, as their new first-team head coach.
“Coventry City are delighted to announce the appointment of George Boateng and Rhys Carr as the Club’s new first-team coaches” the club announced on Monday 1st July, 2024.
Boateng will join the Sky Blues immediately as they begin pre-season training at Ryton, alongside Rhys Carr and goalkeeping coach Aled Williams.
The 48-year-old Boateng is a familiar face to Coventry City fans, having played for the club from 1998 to 1999, scoring 7 goals in 57 games after moving from Feyenoord. He notably scored twice in a league victory against Aston Villa at Villa Park, a win that came after 63 years. Boateng also had stints at Aston Villa, Middlesbrough, Hull City, and Nottingham Forest during his playing career.
Born in Ghana, Boateng represented the Netherlands four times at the international level. He has coaching experience from his time at Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa, where he served as the Under 18s and Under 23s coach.
Boateng’s most recent role was as the assistant coach of the Ghana national team, a position he held from May 2022. However, he was relieved of his duties alongside head coach Chris Hutton following a disappointing 2024 AFCON campaign in Ivory Coast.
