Ghanaian football legend Asamoah Gyan has expressed his joy and gratitude after Spanish-Ghanaian youngster Nico Williams named him as his idol during an interview.
Gyan, who remains Ghana’s all-time top scorer with 51 goals, felt honored by the recognition from one of the most sought-after talents in Europe.
Nico Williams, the younger brother of Inaki Williams, plays for Athletic Club in La Liga and has been making waves in the football world with his impressive performances. The 22-year-old contributed to three goals during Spain’s recent UEFA Euro victory, including one in the final against England.
In an old interview granted to TV3 when he came to Ghana, Nico labeled Gyan as a player he admired while growing up. Gyan responded with excitement, stating he appreciated the acknowledgment, which highlights his impact on the sport.
“I felt very happy when Nico Williams said he idolizes me because I think people have started recognizing what we did for the nation during our time,” Gyan said. “Nico had a good tournament, he is one of the most promising players in the world and attracted by top clubs, so I felt happy with the remarks he gave me.”
As one of Africa’s most successful players, Gyan’s influence extends beyond Ghana’s borders, and it’s clear that Nico Williams is one of many young players who look up to him as a source of inspiration.
