Spanish La Liga club Deportivo Alavés has secured the signing of Ghanaian midfielder Henry Opoku on a three-year contract, with the deal extending until the summer of 2027.

Opoku, an 18-year-old talent who previously played for Ghanaian lower-tier side Atlanta Royals Academy, arrived in Spain last weekend to finalize his move to the Mendizorrotza Stadium. After passing a mandatory medical examination, Opoku officially signed with the Blue and Whites, joining the club’s ranks as part of a strategy to develop emerging global talents.

The move was facilitated by ARG Football Agency, a renowned football management firm, and sees Opoku integrated into Deportivo Alavés B, the club’s second team. This is a significant step in the young midfielder’s career, offering him the opportunity to grow within one of Europe’s most competitive football environments.

Opoku’s signing continues a growing trend of Ghanaian talents finding their way to Spain. His predecessors include notable players like Thomas Partey, who made his mark at Atletico Madrid before joining Arsenal, and others such as Emmanuel Boateng, Mubarak Wakaso, and the late Raphael Dwamena, who left a lasting impact in Spanish football.

Currently, Ghanaian players like Baba Iddrisu (CD Almería), Abdul Mumin (Rayo Vallecano), and Ali Fadal (Valencia) continue to represent the country in La Liga. The summer transfer window also saw other young Ghanaian talents, including David Oduro (FC Barcelona ‘B’) and Bernard Somuah (Celta Vigo), making moves to top Spanish clubs.
