Black Princesses goalkeeper Afi Amenyeku remains hopeful about her team’s prospects despite their 2-1 defeat to Austria in their opening match of the 2024 U20 Women’s World Cup.
The loss in their first Group E game in Colombia was compounded by a late goal from Stella Nyamekye, which, although impressive, wasn’t enough to secure any points for Yussif Basigi’s side.
Reflecting on the match, Amenyeku said, “Football is a game of chance. When the opponent capitalizes on their opportunities, it’s a goal we could have avoided, but that’s the nature of the game.”
She continued, “I’m impressed with my teammates’ performance and determination. We were all committed to winning, but unfortunately, we fell short. However, this is not the end. We have two more matches to play and are looking forward to improving our performance.”
Ghana will next face Japan, who won their opener 7-0, on Thursday, September 5, before concluding their group stage with a match against New Zealand.
