“There must be at least 4 Kumasi players playing regularly for Kotoko” – Young Apostles coach Asare Bediako

Young Apostles head coach Asare Bediako has clarified his recent comments made after the 1-1 draw with Asante Kotoko, emphasizing his admiration for local talent rather than disparaging his coaching counterpart, Prosper Ogum Narteh.

During the post-match press conference, Bediako appeared to suggest that coaches from Kumasi, like himself, deserved a chance at the Kotoko helm, sparking controversy. However, in an interview with Kessben FM, he elaborated on his statements, asserting that his remarks were intended to highlight the capabilities of players and coaches from Kumasi, not to belittle Ogum Narteh’s efforts.

“Younger Apostles is a young team, and that is why I was excited about drawing with Asante Kotoko. It felt like a victory for us,” Bediako said. “We prepared thoroughly and studied Kotoko closely before the game. I believe we had psyched our players well.”

He continued, “Yes, I said Kumasi needs Kumasi. This is not just about coaches; it’s about players too. Many successful players and coaches from Kumasi have contributed to Kotoko’s success in the past. I think it’s essential to have at least four regular players from Kumasi in the squad. This doesn’t mean that players from outside Kumasi lack talent. Across the Ghana Premier League, players from Kumasi have been excelling.”

Bediako stressed that his comments were not a direct challenge for the Kotoko coaching position but rather an affirmation of the potential within the Kumasi football community. “I’m not saying I want to coach Kotoko, but I believe that if given the chance, I could be successful there,” he added.
