GHALCA chairman Kudjoe Fianoo calls for Kurt Okraku’s resignation if Ghana fails to qualify for AFCON 2025

Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) Chairman, Kudjoe Fianoo, has called on Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku to step down if the Black Stars fail to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Ghana is currently in a precarious position in Group F, sitting third with just two points from four games. Their qualification hopes are hanging by a thread, with the team needing to secure wins in their remaining matches to stay in the race.

Speaking to Luv FM, Fianoo expressed his frustration over the Black Stars’ struggles, especially considering the expanded AFCON format, which now allows 24 teams to qualify. He believes this should have made the qualification process easier for Ghana. “The participating teams in AFCON have been increased to 24, which should make qualification easier, but we are struggling. If we fail to qualify, I don’t know if there’s any failure worse than that, and that’s why if that happens, they need to eat humble pie and resign,” Fianoo said.

Fianoo further criticized the GFA leadership, noting that the Black Stars’ failure to progress beyond the group stage in recent AFCON tournaments—Cameroon 2021 and Ivory Coast 2024—reflects poorly on the current administration. “I don’t think they have anything more to offer Ghana football if we fail to make it,” he added.

Ghana’s qualification campaign hinges on their upcoming fixtures: a crucial away match against Angola on Friday, November 15, followed by a must-win home encounter against Niger at the Accra Sports Stadium on Monday, November 18, 2024.
