Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has issued a heartfelt apology to Ghanaians following the team’s failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana’s 2-1 defeat to Niger in their final Group F match on Monday at the Accra Sports Stadium confirmed their elimination from the qualification race. This marks the first time in 20 years that the Black Stars will miss the continental showpiece, set to take place in Morocco next year.
Speaking after the match, Coach Addo expressed deep regret over the team’s underwhelming performance and acknowledged the nation’s disappointment.
“I am ready to apologise. I am so sorry that we did not do well and qualify. I am sorry because I know how it feels and how Ghanaians are hurt. I am so sorry,” he said during his post-match remarks.
The Black Stars endured a disastrous qualifying campaign, failing to win any of their six matches. With just three points earned, Ghana finished bottom of Group F, trailing Angola, Sudan, and Niger.
In light of the setback, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has scheduled a meeting on Wednesday to evaluate the situation and strategize on the future of the Black Stars. The discussion is expected to address both technical and structural issues, with key decisions likely to shape the team’s path forward.
