U-20 AFCON: ‘Black Satellites now focused on tactics and team chemistry’ – Desmond Ofei

Black Satellites head coach Desmond Ofei has shed light on Ghana’s build-up to the 2025 U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), expressing confidence in his team’s readiness for the continental challenge.

Ghana heads into the tournament in Egypt with a proud legacy, boasting four U-20 AFCON titles and the historic 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup crown — the only African nation to win the global title at that level.

Drawn into a tough Group C alongside reigning champions Senegal, DR Congo, and the Central African Republic, the Black Satellites are set to face a stern test from the outset.

Speaking about the team’s preparations, Ofei said:
“We started with a local talent identification programme that ran for about five weeks. We looked at a wide pool of players from domestic competitions. Then we went to Morocco for a three-nation tournament which gave us a clearer picture of our core squad. The next phase is all about tactical fine-tuning and strengthening team chemistry.”

The top two teams from each group, along with the two best third-placed sides, will qualify for the quarter-finals.

The tournament kicks off on Sunday, April 27, 2025, and concludes with the final on May 18, 2025. Beyond the quest for continental glory, a top-four finish will guarantee qualification for the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile — a stage where Ghana once made history and now hopes to return with renewed ambition.
