Jamie Jermaine Bynoe-Gittens (born 8 August 2004 in Reading, England) is an English professional footballer who plays as a winger. Standing at 5 feet 9 inches (1.75 metres), Bynoe-Gittens is known for his pace, dribbling skills, and attacking flair. At 21 years old, he continues to develop as one of England’s promising wide players.
Chelsea’s summer recruitment drive has brought in one of Europe’s brightest young talents, with the signing of Jamie Jermaine Gittens from Borussia Dortmund. He has already built a reputation as a fearless dribbler and electric attacking presence.
Gittens’ football journey began in the youth ranks of Reading before short spells at Chelsea and Manchester City helped refine his skills. In 2020, following the path of fellow English stars Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham, he took the bold decision to join Borussia Dortmund — a club renowned for nurturing young talent.
Initially known as Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, the winger dropped the first part of his surname at the advice of his father ahead of the 2024/25 season, a move that coincided with his rise as a first-team regular at Dortmund.
Playing Style and Attributes
Standing at 5ft 9in with a slight build, Gittens is capable of operating on either wing, though his preferred role is cutting inside from the left flank onto his stronger right foot. Blessed with blistering acceleration, close control, and the confidence to take on defenders, he is a constant threat in one-on-one situations. His style of play draws comparisons to Sancho, but with an even sharper turn of pace.
Equally adept with both feet, Gittens combines quick interchanges with teammates and incisive off-the-ball movement. He is also capable of producing decisive end product, whether through long-range strikes or pinpoint final passes.
Breakthrough at Dortmund
After joining Dortmund, Gittens quickly progressed through the academy ranks and made his Bundesliga debut in April 2022 in a 6-1 win over VfL Wolfsburg. The 2024/25 campaign proved to be his breakout season, with the winger making 32 Bundesliga appearances and scoring eight goals, while also netting four times in 14 UEFA Champions League outings.
International Career
A mainstay in England’s youth system, Gittens was part of the Under-19 side that lifted the European Championship in 2022, starting in the final against Israel. He has since progressed to the England Under-21 squad, with senior recognition seemingly a matter of time.
What Chelsea Can Expect
At Stamford Bridge, Gittens arrives as a high-ceiling signing — a winger with the flair to excite supporters and the discipline to fit into an evolving tactical setup. His pace, creativity, and fearlessness on the ball are expected to inject unpredictability into Chelsea’s attack as he adapts to life back in the Premier League.
Parents
Gittens is the son of Michael Bynoe-Gittens, a Barbadian cricket player. Gittens holds both British and Barbadian citizenship.
