The National Under-17 team, began their preparations for the upcoming Africa U-17 Championship with a morale-boosting 2-0 victory on Wednesday afternoon against Division One side Hakla FC, thanks entirely to a superb brace from Tema City FC winger, Theophilus Nana Yaw Arthur.
Theophilus, a player who has generated considerable discussion despite being just over the age threshold for the U-17 team, proved to be the difference-maker in the friendly encounter, netting both goals to secure the win.
The friendly, the first official outing for the national side as they gear up for the continental tournament in Morocco in March-April 2026, served as a crucial test of the squad’s readiness against professional opposition.
Yaw Shines in First Test
While the scoreline suggests a comfortable win, Hakla FC provided a stern challenge, forcing the national U-17 players to work hard for their chances. However, the raw talent and finishing ability of Theophilus Nana Yaw shone through.
The attacker, whose age and prodigious talent have been a hot topic of conversation among local football pundits, demonstrated why he is a key figure in the team’s plans, finding the back of the net twice with clinical precision.
”It was a good test for the boys, and a positive start to our preparations,” said a member of the U-17 technical team after the match.
“Theophilus showed what he is capable of. His contribution was vital, and we will continue to monitor his progress and that of the entire squad as we head towards the Championship.”
The victory will undoubtedly give the young national team confidence as they intensify their training regimen and face more preparatory matches in the coming weeks.
The team aims to be among the continent’s best at the Africa U-17 Championship, which is scheduled to take place in Morocco.
