Ghana football legend Asamoah Gyan has revealed that many people attempted to take advantage of him financially during his playing days.
Speaking in an interview with former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand, the former Black Stars captain reflected on key moments of his career and the pressures that came with success.
Gyan recalled the painful moment at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa when he missed a late penalty against Uruguay, a miss that denied Ghana a place in the semifinals. He admitted that the incident made him feel he had disappointed not only the team but the entire African continent.
The ex-Ghana striker also explained that after securing a big-money move from Sunderland to Chinese club Shanghai SIPG—at a time when he was among the highest-paid footballers in the world—the financial demands from people around him increased sharply.
According to Gyan, expectations came from all directions, including family members, friends, and even people he barely knew. He noted that wherever he went, there was constant pressure to give out money.
He said that although he often helped when he could, some individuals crossed the line and tried to exploit his generosity.
Asamoah Gyan represented Ghana at three FIFA World Cups and remains the highest-scoring African player in the history of the tournament, cementing his place as one of the continent’s greatest footballers.
