Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has explained that the long-standing football rivalry between Ghana and Nigeria is driven by healthy competition and national pride, not hostility.

Speaking on a popular football podcast, the ex-striker dismissed claims that the two nations dislike each other because of football. According to him, the rivalry is a positive one that pushes both sides to always want to outdo the other.

“Ghana and Nigeria have a good rivalry. It is not about hatred. We always want to challenge ourselves. They want to beat us in everything, even Jollof,” Gyan said.

He noted that the competitive spirit between the two countries goes beyond football and extends into culture, music, and friendly banter, but remains respectful.

“At the end of the day, we love each other. We are very good rivals. Anyone who says we hate each other is wrong. We love each other, but we don’t want the other side to win,” he added.

Ghana and Nigeria are two of Africa’s most successful football nations, and their meetings over the years have played key roles in World Cup qualifiers, Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, and other regional competitions.

One of the most memorable recent encounters saw Ghana knock Nigeria out of the 2022 World Cup qualifiers on away goals, while Nigeria has enjoyed success against Ghana in several AFCON knockout games in the past.

These results have kept the rivalry strong, continuing to spark passionate debates among fans in both countries, while maintaining mutual respect between the nations.
