Kamaldeen Sulemana endured a difficult evening as Atalanta BC suffered a heavy 6-1 defeat to FC Bayern Munich in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 clash.
The Ghanaian winger started the game on the right side of attack and played 74 minutes at the Stadio di Bergamo, but he was unable to stop the Italian club from being overwhelmed by the German champions in front of their home fans.
Bayern Munich took control of the match from the opening stages, applying constant pressure and breaking through Atalanta’s defence with clinical finishing. The visitors quickly built a comfortable lead within the first half hour after converting several chances with pace and precision.
Atalanta struggled to recover from the early setback, as Bayern continued their dominance after the break. The German side maintained their attacking intensity in the second half and added more goals to seal an emphatic victory away from home.
Sulemana found it difficult to make a significant impact against the strong Bayern side. The 23-year-old winger, who has mostly featured as a squad option for Atalanta this season, was eventually substituted late in the match as the home side attempted to regain control of the game.
Atalanta managed to score a consolation goal deep into stoppage time, but the late strike offered little relief in what had already become a one-sided encounter.
The heavy defeat leaves Atalanta facing a huge challenge ahead of the return leg in Germany. Trailing by five goals, the Italian club will require an exceptional performance in Munich if they hope to keep their hopes of reaching the quarter-finals alive.
Sulemana and his teammates will now focus on regrouping and preparing for the second leg scheduled for March 18, where they will aim to produce a much stronger display against Bayern Munich.
