Ghana international Antoine Semenyo marked a landmark moment in his career by making his UEFA Champions League debut for Manchester City FC during Wednesday’s clash against Real Madrid CF.
The Black Stars striker has become only the second player in history to progress from non-league football through all four professional divisions in England before featuring in Europe’s elite club competition. The only other player to achieve a similar feat is former Republic of Ireland defender Steve Finnan, who played for clubs including Welling United, Birmingham City, Notts County, Fulham, Liverpool, and Portsmouth.
Semenyo’s rise through English football has been extraordinary. Born in London, he earned his first professional contract with Bristol City FC at 17 and gained crucial experience during loan spells with Bath City FC, Newport County AFC, and Sunderland AFC. These stints helped him develop before establishing himself as a first-team regular at Bristol City in the 2020/21 season.
In January 2023, Semenyo moved to AFC Bournemouth, where his goal-scoring form in the first half of the 2025/26 season earned him a transfer to Manchester City FC, scoring seven goals in 13 appearances prior to his UCL debut.
Although Manchester City suffered a 3-0 defeat to Real Madrid, Semenyo’s debut represents a proud milestone in a journey that has taken him from non-league football to Europe’s biggest stage, highlighting his resilience and talent as one of Ghana’s brightest attacking stars.
