Antoine Semenyo has revealed that his decision to represent Ghana national football team instead of England national football team was straightforward, driven by both opportunity and deep family pride.
Speaking on the AllOutFootball Podcast, the Manchester City forward admitted he was never firmly in contention for England, making Ghana’s approach in 2021 an obvious turning point in his international career.
“I was never really in the England rankings like that anyway. Ghana came in 2021, and I can’t turn down playing first team for Ghana, so it was such an easy decision,” he explained.
The 26-year-old attacker made his debut for Ghana at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and has since grown into an important figure for the Black Stars. With his current form at club level, he is widely expected to play a key role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Beyond football, Semenyo highlighted the emotional impact of his decision, revealing how much it meant to his family.
“My dad was so happy… everyone in my family was just happy that they support Ghana. I can’t even explain—it was crazy,” he added.
His comments shed light on the personal side of international allegiance decisions, particularly for dual-nationality players. For Semenyo, the choice was clear—Ghana offered him a platform, and representing his roots made the decision even more meaningful.
As Ghana prepare for a challenging Group L campaign against England, Croatia, and Panama, Semenyo will be hoping to carry his impressive club form onto the global stage and make a lasting impact for the Black Stars.
