Ghanaian forward Kelvin Boateng was on the scoresheet, but his effort was not enough to prevent FK Austria Wien from suffering a 3-1 home defeat to FC Red Bull Salzburg in the Austrian Bundesliga on Sunday afternoon at the Generali Arena.
The visitors made a flying start to the encounter, with Bosnian teenage talent Kerim Alajbegovic striking inside just three minutes to hand Salzburg an early lead and immediately put the hosts on the back foot.
Salzburg maintained their intensity and control, doubling their advantage in the 28th minute through Ivorian striker Karim Konaté, who finished off a slick team move after being teed up by Alajbegovic.
Austria Vienna, however, showed improved intent after the break and were rewarded in the 61st minute when Boateng reacted sharply inside the box to calmly convert from close range, reducing the deficit and briefly sparking hopes of a comeback.
The Ghanaian forward finished off a neat assist from Gambian defender Abubakar Barry, registering his third league goal of the season.
But any momentum was quickly extinguished as experienced Salzburg forward Karim Onisiwo restored the visitors’ two-goal cushion shortly after, effectively sealing all three points for the dominant away side.
Boateng’s strike takes his tally to three goals in 15 Austrian Bundesliga appearances this season, as he continues to build consistency and gain valuable top-flight experience.
Elsewhere, Ghanaian youngster Edmund Baidoo was included in Salzburg’s matchday squad but remained an unused substitute throughout the contest.
