Former Ghana international Mahatma Otoo has admitted that he would have preferred former Black Stars coach Otto Addo to remain in charge of the national team until after the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking on the recent coaching transition, Otoo expressed his disappointment over the decision to part ways with Otto Addo, while also acknowledging the appointment of experienced Portuguese tactician Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach.

“I was hoping they would keep Otto Addo until after the World Cup but unfortunately they’ve sacked him for an experienced coach,” Otoo told ghanasportspage.com

Despite his personal preference, the former Accra Hearts of Oak SC striker stressed the importance of unity and urged Ghanaians to fully support the current technical team as the Black Stars prepare for the global tournament.

He emphasized that expectations for Ghana at the World Cup should remain realistic, insisting that the immediate priority should be a strong showing and progression beyond the group stage rather than targeting the trophy.

“We can’t say we are going to win the World Cup,” he stated.

“What the fans are expecting is to have a good tournament and not exit in the group stages.”

Otoo further called on supporters to rally behind both the players and the coaching staff, regardless of the recent changes in leadership, as Ghana continue their preparations for the biggest football competition in the world.

“We know we won’t win the World Cup but let’s support the team and the coach. I want us to go past the group stage, at least,” he added.

With the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaching, Ghanaian fans are hopeful that the new technical direction under Queiroz will help the Black Stars deliver a more competitive and improved performance on the global stage after recent disappointments.
