Former Ghana international Mahatma Otoo has urged Ghanaians to temper expectations ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that while the Black Stars should aim to compete strongly, winning the tournament is currently beyond their reach.
Speaking on Ghana’s prospects, the ex-Accra Hearts of Oak SC striker emphasized that supporters should focus on seeing the team deliver a solid performance and, more importantly, progress beyond the group stage rather than dreaming of lifting the trophy.
According to Otoo, realism is key when assessing Ghana’s current squad strength and global competitiveness. He stressed that while the Black Stars possess talent and potential, expectations must be aligned with the team’s present level as they prepare for football’s biggest stage.
“We have to be realistic. We can’t say we are going to win the World Cup,” he stated, adding that fans would be satisfied if the team can at least advance past the group phase and show improvement compared to previous tournaments.
Otoo also reflected on changes within the national team setup, revealing his disappointment over the decision not to retain former head coach Otto Addo until after the World Cup. He noted that continuity could have benefited the team, even as he acknowledged the appointment of an experienced replacement.
Despite his reservations, the former striker called on the nation to rally behind current head coach Carlos Queiroz and the Black Stars as they continue preparations for the tournament.
He further emphasized unity and support from fans, insisting that collective backing will be crucial if Ghana hopes to make a meaningful impact in the competition.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia and Panama, a challenging group that will test the Black Stars’ resilience and ambition on the world stage.
