World Cup 2026 Preview: Haiti vs Scotland – Team News, Predicted Lineups and Prediction

Two nations returning to football’s biggest stage meet at Boston Stadium in Massachusetts on Sunday, as Haiti national football team face Scotland national football team in their opening Group C fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Both sides enter the tournament as underdogs in a demanding group that also features Brazil and Morocco, meaning the stakes are already high in their opening encounter.

Match Preview

Haiti return to the World Cup for the first time in 52 years, with their only previous appearance coming in 1974 when they endured a difficult campaign, losing all three group matches and conceding heavily.

This qualification marks a significant achievement for the Grenadiers, who navigated a demanding CONCACAF campaign with six wins and two draws, sealing their place in the expanded 48-team tournament with crucial late victories over Costa Rica and Nicaragua.

Despite their success on the pitch, Haiti’s preparations have been shaped by challenging off-field circumstances, including playing “home” fixtures outside their country due to security concerns, a factor that has limited continuity in their build-up.

Scotland, meanwhile, arrive at their ninth World Cup finals determined to finally break their long-standing group-stage curse.

The Tartan Army secured qualification in dramatic fashion, finishing top of their UEFA group thanks to late heroics against Denmark, and they come into the tournament with renewed belief under Steve Clarke, who recently extended his contract.

Recent friendly results suggest growing momentum, with convincing wins over Curaçao and Bolivia following earlier setbacks against Japan and Ivory Coast.

Scotland will be particularly motivated given their painful World Cup history, having never progressed beyond the group stage in any of their previous appearances at the competition.

Team News

Haiti have no major injury concerns and are expected to stick with their established 4-4-2 system.

Veteran goalkeeper and captain Johny Placide will anchor the side, supported by a defensive line likely to include Carlens Arcus and Ricardo Ade. In attack, Wilson Isidor is expected to partner Duckens Nazon, the nation’s all-time leading scorer.

For Scotland, Billy Gilmour is ruled out through injury, while Scott McKenna remains doubtful. However, Scott McTominay is expected to feature after a minor illness scare.

Steve Clarke has several midfield options, with McGinn, Ferguson, McLean, and Christie all competing for places, while Lawrence Shankland is expected to lead the line alongside Che Adams.

The goalkeeping decision remains between Angus Gunn and veteran Craig Gordon, with Gunn currently favoured.

Predicted Lineups

Haiti (4-4-2):
Placide; Arcus, Ade, Delcroix, Experience; Deedson, Jean Jacques, Bellegarde, Providence; Isidor, Nazon

Scotland (4-4-2):
Gunn; Hickey, Hanley, Souttar, Robertson; Doak, McTominay, Ferguson, McGinn; Adams, Shankland

Prediction

Haiti’s resilience and spirit will make them competitive, but Scotland’s greater experience at this level and superior squad depth should prove decisive.

The Tartan Army will view this as a must-win fixture before tougher tests against Brazil and Morocco.

Prediction: Haiti 1-2 Scotland
