Ghana’s goalkeeping coach has shed light on head coach Carlos Queiroz’s decision to work with four goalkeepers during the Black Stars’ 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign, explaining that the strategy is designed to improve the quality and intensity of training sessions rather than provide additional matchday options.
While Lawrence Ati-Zigi, Benjamin Asare and Joseph Anang make up Ghana’s official 26-man World Cup squad, Solomon Agbasi has remained with the team in camp to play a vital role in the squad’s daily preparations.
According to the goalkeeping coach, Queiroz’s training philosophy demands a high volume of shooting and crossing exercises, making it essential to have four goalkeepers available to maintain intensity while managing workloads.
“We have four, and sometimes there’s speculation about why four goalkeepers,” he told Ghanafa.org.
“The reason is coach Carlos Queiroz likes to do a lot of finishing and crossing, and it’s important we have four so they can rotate. There’s less repetition for each one of them, and that keeps them healthy and sharp.”
The coach believes the approach not only reduces physical strain but also ensures every goalkeeper remains fully engaged and ready whenever called upon during the tournament.
He also highlighted the strong bond that has developed within the goalkeeping department, praising the players for embracing competition while maintaining a supportive and unified atmosphere.
“We’ve created a competitive yet positive environment. We brought a certain energy and spirit to training. The cooperation has been unbelievable,” he said.
The positive environment has been evident throughout Ghana’s World Cup preparations, with each goalkeeper pushing the others to higher standards while prioritising the success of the team.
The coach reserved special praise for Ati-Zigi, Asare, Anang and Agbasi, commending their professionalism, humility and commitment to the national cause.
Their collective attitude has strengthened the Black Stars’ preparations as Ghana looks to build on its opening 1-0 victory over Panama and continue its quest for a place in the World Cup knockout stages.
With every member of the goalkeeping unit playing a role on and off the pitch, Queiroz’s four-goalkeeper strategy has become an important part of the Black Stars’ preparations as they gear up for their crucial Group L encounter against England.
