“It’s frustrating” – Asamoah Gyan slams Black Stars after Colombia defeat, questions lack of urgency and tactical changes

Former Ghana captain Asamoah Gyan has delivered a scathing assessment of the Black Stars following their 1-0 defeat to Colombia in the Round of 32 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, criticising the team’s lack of urgency and questioning their tactical approach.

Ghana’s campaign ended in disappointment in Kansas City after Jhon Arias’ solitary strike sealed victory for Colombia, with the Black Stars struggling to create meaningful opportunities and failing to register a shot on target.

Speaking on SuperSport after the match, Gyan expressed frustration at what he described as a passive response from the team after going behind.

“The way Ghana played today, I don’t like when you are losing and do not show any urgency. It’s frustrating. Show the world you want to win,” the Black Stars’ all-time top scorer said.

Gyan also raised concerns over tactical adjustments made during the tournament, suggesting Ghana had drifted away from the structure that worked effectively earlier in the competition.

“In my view, we should have kept playing the way we played against England. It worked for us. If we keep changing tactics during the tournament, there is a problem,” he added.

The Black Stars reached the knockout stage after finishing Group L as one of the best third-placed teams, recording four points from a win over Panama, a draw with England, and a narrow defeat to Croatia.

However, their attacking struggles continued against Colombia, where they were unable to test the opposition goalkeeper throughout the match.

Ghana’s World Cup run ended with a record of one win, one draw, and two defeats, scoring just two goals while conceding three. Despite a solid defensive foundation at times, Carlos Queiroz’s side ultimately bowed out at the Round of 32 stage.
