Former Ghana international Richmond Boakye Yiadom has stressed that passion for the club, connection with supporters and love for the game should be the biggest motivation for players competing in the Ghana Premier League.
The experienced striker believes footballers should not focus solely on financial rewards, insisting that representing a club and making fans proud carries greater value.
“It’s not about making huge money to play in the Ghana Premier League. Whatever little the league can offer is enough. What matters most is playing for the fans and the club you love,” Boakye Yiadom said.
Boakye Yiadom, popularly known as “Yiadom”, enjoyed a remarkable career that saw him feature for several clubs across Europe and Africa. He began his professional journey with Bechem United before earning a move abroad.
The forward played for top European clubs including Juventus, Genoa CFC, Red Bull Salzburg and Crvena zvezda, where he became known for his strength, finishing ability and attacking instincts.
During his time with Red Bull Salzburg, Boakye scored over 40 goals across competitions, helping the club compete successfully domestically and in European competitions. He also had spells with clubs such as Roda JC Kerkrade, Latina Calcio 1932 and Lecce.
At international level, Boakye represented Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars, making 19 appearances and scoring 7 goals. He was part of Ghana’s squad for major competitions and was regarded as one of the country’s promising attacking talents.
After years abroad, Boakye Yiadom returned to Ghanaian football, where he continued to share his experience and encourage younger players to value commitment, loyalty and the relationship between clubs and supporters.
His comments highlight the importance of passion and identity in the Ghana Premier League, where many players dream of making an impact for the clubs they grew up supporting.
