The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly weighing up a surprise move to appoint Black Queens head coach Kim Lars Björkegren as interim coach of the Black Stars ahead of next month’s crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
According to local reports, the Swedish tactician is being considered to lead Ghana in the two Group C qualifiers against Somalia on November 11 and 15, with assistant coaches Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko expected to support him.
The reported plan comes after the Black Stars’ poor start to the qualifiers, having suffered back-to-back defeats to Côte d’Ivoire and The Gambia. Those disappointing results led to the departure of Carlos Queiroz, leaving the GFA searching for a new head coach.
A five-member search committee led by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe has been tasked with identifying Queiroz’s successor. Although October 15 had been set as the deadline for appointing a new coach, reports suggest Björkegren could be handed the role on an interim basis while the search continues.
Björkegren is familiar with the Black Stars environment, having previously worked as an assistant coach before the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He later returned to focus on the Black Queens after Queiroz assembled his own technical team.
However, a temporary switch to the men’s national team could present a challenge for the GFA, with the Black Queens also preparing for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying play-offs, which begin on November 28.
The GFA is yet to confirm the reports, but Björkegren has emerged as the latest name linked with the vacant Black Stars coaching position as Ghana seeks to revive its AFCON qualification campaign.
