Ghanaian forward André Ayew has revealed that he came close to joining Liverpool, but the proposed move collapsed after both parties failed to reach an agreement on certain details.
Ayew disclosed that several top European clubs, including Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur, AS Roma and Inter Milan, had shown interest in signing him. However, his preference at the time was to continue his career in the English Premier League.
“It was quite close. I wanted to go there, but we couldn’t agree on certain things.
“Liverpool, Spurs, Roma and Inter were interested, but I wanted to play in the Premier League. Then Swansea came in, and everything fell into place.
“I was really happy at Swansea. The fans were special, and Huw Jenkins was very fair to me.”
The former Black Stars captain’s comments offer insight into a transfer decision that could have taken his career in a different direction, with Liverpool among the clubs interested in securing his services.
Despite missing out on the opportunity to join Liverpool, Ayew found a home at Swansea City, where he enjoyed his time with the Welsh club and developed a strong connection with its supporters.
He also praised former Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins, describing him as fair and highlighting the positive relationship he had with the club during his spell there.
Ayew’s experience at Swansea formed part of his journey through English football, where he also represented clubs including West Ham United and Nottingham Forest.
His revelation highlights how negotiations and a player’s preferred destination can shape the course of a football career, even when interest comes from some of Europe’s most prominent clubs.
