Portuguese football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to his remarkable 23-year career with the national team.
The 41-year-old made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through an emotional message on social media, confirming that he will hand over Portugal’s iconic number seven shirt after the November international break.
Ronaldo, who made his senior debut for Portugal in August 2003, bows out as the country’s all-time leading goalscorer and most-capped player, with 146 goals in 234 appearances.
In his farewell message, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner described the decision as difficult, reflecting on the privilege and responsibility of representing his country for more than two decades.
He said the time had come to pass the number seven shirt to the next generation, adding that his journey with the national team had changed his life forever.
Ronaldo’s international career was highlighted by Portugal’s historic triumph at the 2016 European Championship, their first major international trophy. He also won the UEFA Nations League twice, in 2019 and 2025.
His retirement marks the end of an era for Portuguese football, although he is expected to continue his club career with Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr.
