Accra Shooting Stars have been crowned champions of the Gothia Cup B18 tournament after defeating Ireland’s Newbridge Town FC 2-1 in a pulsating final at the iconic Gamla Ullevi Stadium in Sweden.
The Ghanaian side produced an outstanding display, dominating large spells of the contest and creating several early opportunities before taking a deserved lead in the 18th minute.
Goalkeeper Cian Rushe could only parry Karim Mohammed’s long-range effort into the path of Daniel Opoku, who reacted quickest to slot home the rebound and hand Accra Shooting Stars the advantage.
Newbridge Town fought back after the break and restored parity through Josh Hamilton, who calmly converted from the penalty spot early in the second half.
However, the Ghanaians responded in style. Opoku completed his brace after an excellent team move, finishing clinically to restore Shooting Stars’ lead and ultimately seal a memorable victory.
The Irish side threw everything forward in the closing stages, but Accra Shooting Stars defended resolutely to preserve their advantage and lift one of the world’s most prestigious youth football trophies.
For his match-winning performance, Daniel Opoku was named the Final MVP after scoring both goals in the championship decider.
Speaking after the victory, the young forward attributed the success to hard work, discipline and faith.
“I planned it and God made it happen. I am very grateful for this opportunity and I also want to thank our supporters. We were compact, organised and calm on the ball. We applied everything we learnt in training, and we deserved to win.”
The triumph represents another landmark achievement for Ghanaian youth football, underlining the country’s ability to produce elite young talent capable of competing and succeeding on the global stage.
