Africa: Kaizer Chiefs sack head coach Stuart Baxter

Kaizer Chiefs have announced the exit of head coach Stuart Baxter with immediate effect.

Baxter’s future at the club had been in doubt, but the Englishman had been expected to see out the season with the Amakhosi.

Word of Baxter’s exit from the club heated up on Wednesday evening, with sources revealing his and his son and goalkeeping coach Lee Baxter’s departures were imminent. Early on Thursday media began to report the speculation, but the club remained silent.

The 68-year-old was in his second stint with the club, after a successful reign between 2012 and 2015. However, it has not been smooth sailing since he replaced Gavin Hunt at the end of last season.

Baxter joined in June last year and was on the bench for the first time as Chiefs lost the CAF Champions League final against Al Ahly.

It has been another silverware-less season for Chiefs, and they exited both cup competitions after just one game, and are currently fourth on the DStv Premiership table, having played 23 games, winning eleven. Despite Baxter’s historical success during his first spell at the club, the supporters began to call his head.

“After a series of meetings, Kaizer Chiefs and coach Stuart Baxter have come to a mutual agreement of an early termination of his contract with immediate effect,” Chiefs confirmed on their website at 8pm.

“Assistant coaches Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard will take charge of the senior team for the remainder of the season, starting with the next match against Stellenbosch FC on Saturday, 23 April 2022.”

Kaizer Chiefs travel to play Stellenbosch this weekend, with the game scheduled for Saturday at 5pm at the Danie Craven Stadium, with assistants Arthur Zwane and Dillon Sheppard expected to lead the team.
