BetPawa has committed to investing at least GH¢7 million over the next five years in elite men’s and women’s football competitions in Ghana. Ntoudi Mouyelo, managing director of Mchezo Limited, which operates BetPawa, announced this initiative during a press conference at the Alisa Hotel in Accra on Tuesday, November 5, 2024.
The investment will continue through the “locker room bonus” program, initially created to reward players in the Ghana Premier League and now expanded to include the Women’s FA Cup. In the program’s first season (2022/23), BetPawa distributed GH¢600,000 among nearly 4,000 players from 17 of the 18 Premier League teams—Asante Kotoko opted out of participation.
Last season, BetPawa raised the locker room bonus from GH¢150 to GH¢400, distributing GH¢1.3 million to about 3,000 players. This season, the program will further extend to reward three members of each team’s coaching or technical staff, with teams selecting which staff members will receive bonuses after each match.
“We expect to pay at least 3,500 players by the end of the season, which amounts to GH¢1.4 million. Over the next five seasons, we anticipate investing GH¢7 million across both the men’s and women’s divisions,” Mouyelo explained.
The locker room bonus program incentivizes players to win matches, with bonuses awarded to all players listed on the winning team’s match-day roster. This initiative is expected to boost motivation and performance across Ghana’s football leagues.
