William Mensah, father of Ghanaian left-back Gideon Mensah, couldn’t be prouder of his son’s achievements as he’s risen to football’s top levels.
Gideon made his World Cup debut for the Black Stars at the 2022 tournament in Qatar and has represented Ghana in the last two Africa Cup of Nations, showcasing his steady growth in the sport—a journey his father has supported every step of the way.
“Before Gideon could crawl, I had already bought a football for him to play with,” William shared in an interview with Flashscore, reflecting on his early encouragement. For young Gideon, there was no question: “It was football or nothing else.”
Currently playing for Auxerre in France’s Ligue 1, Gideon’s talent once attracted attention from Barcelona in 2019. The club even reached out to his agents, but the move fell through when news of it leaked—an issue since one of the conditions was complete confidentiality.
Since his Ghana debut in 2019, Gideon has earned 19 caps and established himself as the national team’s starting left-back, a role he’s embraced with pride and determination.
