Ghana legend Mohammed Polo has urged the Black Stars to alter their style of play in preparation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.
The Black Stars are striving to clinch their fifth Africa Cup of Nations title, having not won the tournament since their last triumph in 1982. They are determined to break the long-standing drought at the upcoming event.
Ghana’s national team, the Black Stars, has been placed in Group B alongside Egypt, Cape Verde, and Mozambique for the tournament, scheduled to take place from January 13 to February 11, 2024.
In an interview with Koforidua-based Bryt FM, Polo expressed his dissatisfaction with the Black Stars’ style of play under Chris Hughton and called for adjustments before the 2023 AFCON tournament.
“We have the players, but in football, it’s about teamwork. Inaki Williams is one of the best strikers we have in the country, but he is struggling to adapt to the national team compared to club football, and this is an issue we have to address,” Polo remarked.
“The Black Stars need a certain level of telepathy; I think there should be a change in our style of play ahead of the AFCON tournament. Our players need to play in the Ghanaian style of football when representing the national team. It will be challenging for us to achieve results if players stick to their club-level style.”
“We have our unique brand as a footballing nation, so it would be wise for the players to adhere to that when on international duty,” he emphasized.
Ghana’s campaign will kick off on January 14, 2024, with a match against Cape Verde, followed by encounters with Egypt and Mozambique.
