Black Stars forward Brandon Thomas-Asante remains optimistic about Coventry City’s potential to compete with top European teams, despite their narrow 2-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the Carabao Cup third round.
Thomas-Asante scored in the 63rd minute to give Coventry City a brief lead, but Tottenham turned the game around with two late goals, netting in the 88th and 92nd minutes to secure their victory.
Reflecting on the match, Thomas-Asante described his goal as “bittersweet” but highlighted his belief in Coventry City’s ability to compete at a high level.
“Even in the second half, we came close, and even when we were one nil up, we could have scored two or three more. It is something we want to improve on. It is a mentality thing and I think it is within us,” he said.
The forward emphasized that the performance against a UEFA Europa League team like Spurs demonstrated Coventry City’s capacity to play against top European standard competition.
“It is good to know we have the capacity to play like that against top European standard competition. That is the standard we want to push onto,” Thomas-Asante added.
Coventry City, currently ranked 14th in the EFL Championship standings, will face Swansea City on Saturday, September 21.
