Daniel Ogunmodede, the Head Coach of Nigerian side Remo Stars, has expressed his belief that Ghana’s representative in the 2023/24 CAF Champions League, Medeama SC, will not be an easy opponent.
The draw held on Tuesday, July 25 in Cairo, Egypt, pitted reigning Ghana Premier League champions, Medeama SC, against Remo Stars in the first leg of the CAF Champions League. The first leg is scheduled to take place at the Cape Coast Sports Stadium from Friday, August 18, to Sunday, August 20. The return fixture will be played in Nigeria between Friday, August 25, and Sunday, August 27, 2023.
Coach Ogunmodede, while admitting that he has little knowledge about their Ghanaian opponents, emphasized that Medeama SC should not be underestimated. He acknowledged that while they may not have the same level of recognition as teams like Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, it makes them a potentially dangerous opponent for Remo Stars.
“I have little or no knowledge about our opponent (Medeama SC). I know they are not a household name like Kotoko and Hearts of Oak, they are not a force to be reckoned with but nevertheless, that makes them a dangerous opponent for us”, he told Oyerepa FM.
This is Medeama SC’s first time participating in the prestigious CAF Champions League, as they had previously competed in the CAF Confederation Cup in 2014 and 2017. Their last involvement in CAF inter-club competitions was in 2016 when they reached the group stages after eliminating South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns in the playoffs.
The winner of the Medeama SC vs. Remo Stars tie will progress to face Guinean giants Horoya AC in the second preliminary round, with the ultimate goal of reaching the group stage. The upcoming clash promises to be a competitive and challenging encounter for both teams.
