During a meeting in Yaoundé on Monday to assess the national team’s performance at the Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon’s football federation dismissed former star striker Samuel Eto’o’s resignation offer, affirming their confidence in his leadership to continue the reconstruction and development of football in Cameroon across all levels.
Despite facing allegations of improper conduct, match-fixing, and corruption over the past year, the federation backed Eto’o, the four-time African Player of the Year, to carry out his plans for Cameroon football. These claims are currently under investigation by the Confederation of African Football, although Eto’o is presumed innocent until proven otherwise by a judicial body.
Concerns have also arisen regarding Eto’o’s ambassadorial role with a sports betting company, with at least one club lodging a complaint to the Cameroonian federation, potentially violating the institution’s codes.
Cameroonian soccer has faced numerous challenges prior to Eto’o’s presidency, including government interference in the national league, corruption allegations, and unfulfilled promises from soccer leaders.
Meanwhile, the future of coach Rigobert Song with the national team remains uncertain following their failure to progress beyond the round of 16 in the AFCON competition.
