For the third year in a row, Chelsea and Real Madrid will face off in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
Last season’s explosive last-eight tie saw Chelsea come close to pulling off a stunning comeback at the Bernabeu after Karim Benzema’s hat-trick looked to have secured Madrid’s victory.
However, Chelsea managed to wipe out the advantage with three goals in Spain before ultimately falling to a 5-4 aggregate defeat to Real Madrid, who went on to win the tournament.
In 2020/21, Chelsea overcame Real Madrid in the semi-finals before lifting the trophy by defeating Manchester City. Real Madrid, 14-time European champions, secured their place in this year’s quarter-finals by defeating Liverpool 6-2 on aggregate. Chelsea, on the other hand, overcame Borussia Dortmund, which has helped to ease the pressure on their manager Graham Potter and sparked a promising turnaround in domestic fortunes.
The first leg of this year’s meeting between the two teams will be at the Bernabeu, with the return fixture taking place in west London.
Meanwhile, Manchester City will face Pep Guardiola’s former team and reigning Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals.
Other quarter-final fixtures include Napoli vs AC Milan, Inter Milan vs Benfica, and the winners of Benfica vs Inter facing off against the winners of AC Milan vs Napoli in the semi-finals. The semi-finals winners will face each other in the Istanbul showpiece on June 10.
