Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo set a new international record when he featured for his side against Liechtenstein on Thursday night.
This was a EURO 2024 qualifier, and Ronaldo needed to play to become the first men’s footballer to represent his country a whopping 197th time.
In doing so, Ronaldo surpassed Kuwait’s Bader Al-Mutawa who had featured 196 times for his country’s senior national team.
Ronaldo went into the encounter tied with Al-Mutawa on 196 international appearances for Portugal, and it was clear that he would start as captain.

Interestingly, Ronaldo netted twice on the night to help Portugal beat Liechtenstein 4-0. He converted a penalty in the 51st minute before firing his second from a free-kick.
Furthermore, Ronaldo, 38, has scored in every single year for Portugal since making his international debut in 2004.
