Dreams FC coach Abdul Karim Zito reflected on his team’s performance after their disappointing defeat against Zamalek in the CAF Confederation Cup semifinals. Despite returning from Egypt with a goalless draw in the first leg, Dreams FC failed to capitalize on their advantage, suffering a 3-0 defeat at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
The goals from Hamza Mathlouthi, Samson Akinyoola, and Mostafa Shalaby sealed Zamalek’s qualification to the finals of the competition, leaving Dreams FC empty-handed.
Zito attributed his team’s inability to score to a lack of focus. He expressed disappointment, stating, “We never had this type of situation before. We didn’t panic even after their first goal. You could see we pushed and created a lot of chances.”
He highlighted the importance of experience, noting, “It’s a lack of experience. The boys only gave up after the third goal. I can do everything but if the players are not mentally stable there is nothing you can do.”
Despite the defeat, Zito commended his team’s efforts and resilience. He remarked, “We couldn’t make it to the final. Lack of focus denied us a goal. I’m proud of the boys, nobody thought we would reach here and I’m very happy.”
Acknowledging the learning experience, Zito emphasized, “We met an experienced team and definitely, this is how it will go. We will know how to go about such games next time. So we can be proud of the journey.”
With their CAF Confederation Cup campaign concluded, Dreams FC will now shift their focus to the Ghana Premier League and the FA Cup. As the current FA Cup holders, Dreams FC have advanced to the semifinals and could potentially return to continental competition if they successfully defend their title.
