Egypt’s defender Mahmoud Hamdy El-Wensh will miss the 2022 World Cup decider against Senegal in Diamniadio due to the accumulation of yellow cards.
The Pharaohs will take a narrow lead to Diamniadio following a 1-0 victory over Senegal in the first leg of the CAF Third Round of the World Cup qualification.
A brilliant through ball from Amr El-Sulya to Mohamad Salah was skilfully controlled by the Liverpool man, whose strike came off the bar, but the rebound hit Ciss before rolling into his own net.
Despite the win, Egypt will have been handed bad news ahead of the second leg as it has been confirmed that El-Wensh will miss the deciding game due to the accumulation of yellow cards.
The 26-year-old had picked up two yellow cards against Libya and Gabon in the second round of the qualifiers, before getting cautioned after just 30 minutes on Friday evening.
To make matters worse for the Egyptians, El-Wensh’s partner in defence Abdelmonem is a doubt for the return-leg clash after being forced off the pitch on Friday with a facial injury.
The duo will join Ahmed Hegazi who has been absent since the AFCON due to injury, meaning a new-defensive lineup of Yasser Ibrahim and one of Mahmoud Alaa or Ayman Ashraf might start in Diamniadio.
