Henry Asante Twum, the Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has officially confirmed that the players received appearance fees for the international friendly games in October.
The Black Stars faced Mexico and the US Men’s national team in these two friendlies.
The match against CONCACAF champions, Mexico, took place at the Bank of America Stadium, and the Black Stars succumbed to a 2-0 defeat. In the final game against the US Men’s national team, the four-time African champions faced a heavy 4-0 loss at the GEODIS Park in Nashville.
Despite the underwhelming performance by the players, Asante Twum confirmed in an interview that the players who were called up for these games received their appearance fees. He explained that for friendly matches, players have an appearance fee. The money was disbursed to them upon their arrival in the camp, even before they took to the field.
“For friendly games, the players have an appearance fee to take. Whoever is called up, the money is even given to them before they even play,” he told Asempa FM.
“Every player signed when they arrived in camp.”
When asked about the specific amounts paid to each player, he mentioned that he couldn’t provide that information.
“I cannot confirm how much each player was paid.”
These friendly games were part of the Black Stars’ preparations for the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros scheduled for November, as well as the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) set for January in Ivory Coast.
