Former President John Dramani Mahama has provided insights into the recent challenges faced by the Black Stars, shedding light on the team’s lackluster performance across multiple tournaments.
Amid the team’s current struggles, marked by early exits in key competitions, Mahama delved into the reasons behind their disappointing showings. Under Milovan Rajevac in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), Ghana faced a premature exit in the group stage, securing only one point in three matches.
The 2022 World Cup, led by coach Otto Addo, saw a similar outcome, with Ghana exiting at the group stage with just three points.
The ongoing 2023 AFCON in Ivory Coast has added to the team’s woes, with another group-stage elimination, featuring a defeat and two draws.
Mahama attributed the team’s struggles to the decision of building the squad predominantly around foreign players. Expressing concern, he stated, “If you bring only foreign players, they don’t play together in their teams, and then when it is time for competition, you bring them and come and tell them to play, it won’t work.”
Following the disappointing performance in Ivory Coast, coach Chris Hughton was dismissed, and the Executive Council is expected to announce a new head coach soon to lead the Black Stars in future competitions.
