George Owu has disclosed how sad it was for him when he missed the opportunity to sign for Tottenham Hotspurs.

George Owu, one of the best goalkeepers of our time has lifted the lid on his broken move to Tottenham Hotspurs in 2010.

George Owu said, “I had two weeks trials at Tottenham Hotspurs after I left Al Masry in Egypt with then manager Harry Redknapp been impressed with the performance. They had wanted to sign me but on one condition,” said Owu.

He continued, “Win a place in Ghana’s 2023-man squad for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

“Samy Adjei had retired from the national team so it was just Richard Kingston, Philemon McCarthy and I who played in the qualifiers”, continued George Owu.

“Milo’s 23-man squad included Daniel Nii Adjei after he had won the 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup and Heart of Lions’ Stephen Ahorlou who had just won Ghana’s best goalkeeper award.

“I would have joined Tottenham Hotspurs in the English Premier League if I had made the 23-man squad”, added George Owu.

The 41-year-old George Owu was born and bred in Takoradi into a very large family of 11 with his late father being a former striker of Hasaacas. His elder brother Benjamin Owu was a member of the Ghan U-17 team that won the FIFA World Cup in Italy in 1991.

The ex-Sekondi Hasaacas goalkeeper spent 6 years with the Sekondi giants before Herbert Mensah signed him for Asante Kotoko.

He has passed through all the ranks of the national team; U-17, U-20, U-23 and the Black Stars. Owu has immense experience as he was part of Ghana’s 2004 Olympics team and the 2006 AFCON Squad.
